If you’re constantly saving files to your MacBook Pro, you’ll need more storage. Adding an SSD is a great way to expand your storage space.

An SSD is lightweight, fast, and doesn’t draw power from your computer. It tends to be quieter and lighter. If you’re looking for an SSD, look out for models that are known to work with Macs.

We’ve researched and reviewed the best ones for MacBook Pro computers. There are SSDs from top brands such as Samsung, SanDisk, and Seagate.

What Are SSDs?

Solid state drives are smaller and lighter than traditional hard drives. They are also much cheaper. SSDs are great for laptops because they are very portable.

You can carry around your computer wherever you go without having to worry about cables. SSDs are also great for desktops because they do not require a separate power source.

Entry level SSDs provide an average speed of 500 MB/s. More advanced models offer higher speeds of 1GB/s or 2GB/s. Some SSDs also feature encryption technology to protect data from hackers.

The drive also includes 4 months with Adobe’s CC photography plan, normally £9,98/ $9,99 a month on a yearly plan (read our guide to getting the best deal).

SanDisk Extreme V

The SanDisk Extreme V2 is still a great choice if you want an affordable solid-state drive. The design hasn’t changed much since last year’s version, but this year’s model offers faster performance and longer endurance than before.

This product is made by SanDisk. It is slim and light enough to be carried around in your pocket when traveling with your laptop. There is a handy little cut-off loop in one corner, so you can keep it safe using a carabiner clip or other similar device.

It’s really sturdy, and SanDisk says the rubber-wrapped case is shock resistant for drops of up to 2 meters. Finally, there’s an extra layer of protection as well, with a password setting feature to help protect your important files.

The Difference

The main difference with this V3 model is that SanDisk says that it’s two times faster than its predecessor. Our tests show that it produces a write speed of 1,037 MB/s and a read speed of 909 MB/s.

With storage capacities ranging from 500 GB to 4 TB, the Extreme Portable V3 offers enough space even for backing up desktop computers.

There’s also a Pro model available too, which doubles the speed yet again (costing about 30% more).

Be careful when buying, as the original V1 version of this drive is currently on sale, so be sure to check which of the three different models you’re looking to buy before you break out your credit card.
