What’s A Domain Name?

A domain name consists of two parts:

  • the top-level domain (TLD)
  • the second-level domain (SLD)

For example,.com is the TLD for commercial websites, while.gov is the TLD for government websites.

Each TLD has several SLDs associated with it. For example,.com has many different SLDs like.edu,.org,.net, etc. These SLDs are usually reserved for educational institutions, non-profit organizations, etc.

However, there are other SLDs that are not reserved, such as biz,.info,.name,.pro,.us, and others. The length of an SLD depends on the TLD.

For example, the maximum length of an SLD for.com is 63 characters. If you have multiple levels of subdomains, then each level must be 63 characters long.

What Is A Subdomain?

A subdomain is a smaller part of a bigger domain. You may not realize it, but there are many different parts of the internet. For example, if you type google.com in your browser, you will be taken to Google’s website.

If you go to www.google.com, you will be taken directly to Google’s website. However, if you go to Google.co.uk, you will be taken back to Google’s UK website. Similarly, if you go to youtube.com, you will be taken to YouTube’s website.

But if you go to youtube-video.com, you will end up at YouTube’s video page. When we talk about domains, we are referring to the top level domain (TLD) and second level domain (SLD).

The Benefit Of Subdomain

A subdomain acts as an extension of your main domain name. It helps you organize and navigate to different parts of your site, and it can also redirect users to another URL entirely.

For example, if you own a blog at www.example.com, you could create a subdomain called blog.example.com to direct traffic there. Or, you could create a separate subdomain called twitter.example.com to redirect users to your Twitter profile.

Take the same example at store.yoursitename.com. In this case, you should choose a subdomain name that is easy to type and remember, like store.yoursitelocation.com. You can also use a subdomain to create different versions of your website.

For instance, if you’re developing an online store, you could have a store.yoursitelocation.com that’s just for testing purposes, and then, once you’ve launched the real store, you can redirect traffic there.

Or, if you’re working on a blog, you might have a blog at yoursitelocatio.com that’s just a place to experiment with ideas.

Subdomaining isn’t necessary, but it does help SEO. Search engines recognize subdomains as separate entities, so using your subdomain to add more keywords and backlinks will help your website rank higher.

Subdomains also help users navigate through your site easily, and they can organize your site into digestible sections without creating an extensive and confusing site page.
