A successful search strategy is built around targeting the right types of keywords. You must know what type of keyword you want to target before you start building your campaign.

This post will help you learn more about different types of keywords. You must use the most effective keywords to get more traffic.

Commercial, Informational, Navigational, and Transactional Keywords

Keyword research should take into consideration the different types of keywords, including long-tail keywords. You’ll want to implement an intent-based strategy when implementing SEO and content strategies.

Keywords are classified into four categories:

  • Informational
  • Navigational
  • Commercial
  • Branded

Transactional Keywords

Searchers intending to complete an act or purchase. Instantly determine your audience’s intent.

With Semrush keyword intent analysis, you can instantly see any keyword’s intent value when researching keywords and domains in our database.

All you have to do is search for the intent column or filtering option in any report, just as you would filter for volume, CPC, etc. You can also look up your competitors’ domain overviews and see the ratio of keywords by intent type.

Informational Keywords

There are plenty of keywords with high search volume that don’t lead to website conversions. Why? Because people are simply searching for information or looking up facts.

We call these searches “informative keywords.” Examples include: coffee calories, national coffee day, and the difference between cold brew and iced coffee. You can tell if a keyword is informational by the presence of question words such as what, how, why, when, who, etc.

Google’s Result Pages

Google’s results pages for informational searches often include knowledge panels, carousels, or infoboxes to quickly answer questions when appropriate.

These keywords carry less intent to take real action than transactional or commercial keywords but can be useful in building brand awareness by targeting them with informative content and educating your audience about topics related to your business.

By targeting these terms, your site could become an authority in this niche and trusted by those looking for help or answers to common questions related to this topic.

Navigational Keywords

A navigational search is when you type in a company or brand into a search engine. You’re looking for information about the company or brand.

Examples include: Youtube, Semrush Blog, Where is Angelino’s Coffee located?

People who do this kind of search are already familiar with the company or brand.

Such keywords can be helpful sources for organic traffic if the brand or the site is well-known and popular.

Commercial Keywords

Commercial keywords are words used by people who search for information about a certain product or service. This type of keyword reveals what someone is interested in buying.

People use these keywords to research prices, read reviews, and learn more about a product before making a purchase.

You can target these keywords with comparisons, lists, reviews, or how-tos depending on the specific keyword you’re targeting.

Examples include free coffee, Dunkin’ iced coffee flavors, the iPad vs. the iPad Air, and the iPad Mini Reviews.

These keywords can be valuable opportunities for reaching audiences that might be interested in buying your product.

What Are SEO Keywords?

SEO Keywords are the words people use to search for things online. These keywords help search engines understand what your website is about.

You should use these keywords when writing titles, descriptions, and meta tags. Search engines will then rank your site higher if your keywords match up with what people are looking for.

Types Of Keywords In SEO You Need To Convert

Brian Dean explains the types of keywords in SEO and how to use them effectively. He also mentions that without the right keywords, there is no such thing as SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Keywords are important because they help search engines understand what your website is about. You want to make sure that your keywords are relevant to your site’s content.

This means that if you’re selling something, your keywords should be related to that product or service. For example, if you sell shoes, you might want to use keywords such as “shoes” or “sneakers”.

On the other hand, if you sell cars, you might want to focus more on keywords like “car”, “auto”, “vehicle”, etc.

The following are the different types of keywords in SEO:

  • Short-tail keywords are the most popular type of keyword used by search engines.
  • Long-tail keywords are less popular but still very useful.
  • Technical keywords are used by webmasters who want to improve the ranking of their website.
    • Keyword research tools help webmasters find these keywords.
    • KOn-page optimization helps webmasters make sure that their content is optimized for each of these keywords.

Short Tail Keywords

A short-tail keyword is a keyword that consists of 3 words or less. It has a high search volume but is also highly competitive. People use short-tail keywords as the very first step when searching for things.

Short-tail keywords don’t always convert well because of the difficulties in matching searcher intent, but this particular keyword does appear consistently across our site.

We use it as a theme word that appears consistently throughout our website. It gives Google a strong signal about what we do. But are all the people who search for SEO looking for a WordPress plugin? Probably not.

This doesn’t mean that it isn’t helping. Since this is one of the many more words that we are targeting on our website, including our individual blogs,

Longtail Keyword

Long-tail keywords are very specific and are often used when people are looking for something specific.

For example, if someone wants to buy a new car, they might use a long-tail keyword such as “car” or “new”. This means that there is a lot of competition for this type of keyword, but because it is so specific, it makes it easier to rank well.

Short Term Fresh Keyword

When you think about new keywords, you should think about something that is currently popular.

For example, The Avengers: Infinity War is currently being hyped as the latest blockbuster.

A fresh keyword should be used as an opportunity to break away from your current audience. Be careful, though, because once the buzz dies down, your traffic will drop off dramatically.

Characteristics:

  • High search volume
  • medium competitive rates,
  • specific search intent, and
  • high conversion rate.

Use it to create updated content for your website.

Long Term Evergreen Keyword

Evergreen keywords are those that people use all the time. Search volumes may change over time, but there will always be a steady amount of interest in these topics.

You can be certain that your content will be relevant for a long period of time.

So for pieces focusing on evergreens, you need to make sure they can age gracefully. Or better yet, keep it up-to-date, maybe once a year. Views will be consistent over time.

Double that with the length of time, and you’ll have a sizable number of views with this piece of content.

  • Evergreen content is always informational or educational. You should remember this when writing an article.
  • Make sure there is enough information about the topic.
  • Don’t forget to include links to other related articles.
  • Your article must be well-written and easy to read.

Evergreen Keywords

Evergreen keywords are those that are searched consistently over time. These keywords are used to describe products or services that are relevant to consumers’ needs.

For example, if you’re selling shoes, your keyword might be “shoes.”  You could also sell clothing, so you might use “clothing” as a keyword.

Product Keywords

Product keywords are terms related to a specific brand offering. These types of keywords include phrases that directly reference a brand’s products or services.

Brands need to have a keyword strategy for every product and service so customers and prospects can easily find them through search. For example, Nike Flex Contact.

Keyword Matching Options

Keyword match type determines how closely the keyword needs to match with the user‘s search query so that an ad can be considered for auction.

Broad match serves ads across a wide range of keywords, while exact match serves ads based on a single keyword.

Why Are SEO Keywords?

Keywords are important because they can be used to help people find your site.

You need to use the right keywords to make sure that people find what they’re looking for. Choose keywords that match your website content and your business goals.

When optimizing your website content, there are three main types of keywords that you should use. These include long-tail keywords, broad match keywords, and phrase match keywords.

  • Long-tail keywords are more specific than broad match keywords but less specific than phrase match keywords.
  • Broad match keywords are the most popular type of keyword, because they’re easy to rank for.
  • Phrase match keywords are often used by businesses who want to target a specific audience.
