Medium is an American online publication platform developed by Evan Williams. He founded it in August 2012.

It was originally created as a place to publish long-form content. It is now owned by A Medium Corporation, and it is also used as a social networking site.

In March 2021, Medium announced that it was changing its business model by reducing the number of paid journalists working on Medium publications, while increasing the number of independent writers supported by Medium.

Medium is a social network that allows you to share your thoughts and ideas with others. You can start by following people or organizations you’re interested in.

Once you follow someone, you’ll see what they post and interact with them. You can also comment on posts, ask questions, and share your own content.

History

Evan Williams was the founder of Twitter. He wanted to help people write long messages. But he didn’t want to force them to do this. So he made a website called Medium.com.

Medium acquired the rich media platform Embedly in 2016. In January 2020, Medium acquired the social-based ebook company Glose.

Medium employees formed a trade union with CODE CWA in February 2020. According to the Medium Worker Union, 70% of medium employees have signed up to join.

Mission

On Medium, you can write as many words as you want. You can also share your work with other people. And if someone else writes something interesting about your topic, you can read it.

Medium focuses on optimizing the time visitors stay on the website. Medium doesn’t have any paid staff. Instead, it relies on freelancers who write articles for them.

Medium also offers paid subscriptions to premium features such as more storage space and advanced analytics tools. Medium has been criticized for being too similar to other platforms such as Tumblr and Blogger.

Partner Program

Medium pays its writers based on how many people read them. Writers are paid more as readers read longer articles. Members pay a portion of their subscriptions to writers they read most often.

Medium Staff

Medium has a truly global workforce, but it also has a global team of curators who work around the clock finding great content. These curators’ choices determine which stories get viewed and which stories don’t.

Medium has about 200 employees. In 2017, Medium laid off 50 workers. That’s about 1/3 of its workforce. Recently, Medium made a big change by firing most of its editorial team.

Most of the workers took the buys out without question, and what’s weird is that Ev’s decision to slash the editorial department came only months after news of a medium workers’ union was created.

Medium Audience

According to an article at TheVerge, Medium’s users are 71% white, 55% male, and 53% make more than $100K/year. Despite this tidbit, figuring out what the medium user demographic really looks like is difficult.

That information would have been taken from a form filled out by a small percentage of people. Even still, that’s our best guess at figuring the medium user demographics.
